Tour Of Tameside 1 – Park Bridge To Portland Basin
Tour Of Tameside 1 is the first section of this circular walk, which is an alternative route to the Tameside Trail. The tour visits all 9 towns in the borough, albeit some of them only briefly.
Some parts of the route are the same as the Tameside Trail, this is unavoidable. The Tour Of Tameside is an anti-clockwise walk and keeps to the countryside or waterways and only short sections are on roads.
Tour Of Tameside 1 starts at Park Bridge in Ashton-under-Lyne and then goes along the Hollinwood Branch Canal to Daisy Nook. From Daisy Nook the Visitors Centre is passed and Stannybrook Road is crossed before the route rejoins the now overgrown Hollinwood Branch Canal to Littlemoss. The canal finishes at Littlemoss and the Tour Of Tameside 1 takes the route of the former canal to Medlock Street in Droylsden.
Tour Of Tameside 1 then continues through Lees Park in Droylsden to the Snipe estate in Audenshaw. From the Snipe estate and then down Lumb Lane in Audenshaw, it takes the Ashton Canal towpath at Lumb Lane bridge at the park area. The last stage of the Tour Of Tameside 1 is along the Ashton Canal in Audenshaw, passing through Guide Bridge and then onto the Portland Basin in Ashton-under-Lyne. This part of the Tour Of Tameside 1 is also part of the Cheshire Ring Canal Walk which continues along the Peak Forest Canal and then the Macclesfield Canal all the way to Macclesfield itself.
Tour Of Tameside 1 is a flat walk and is graded moderate. It is 6.7 miles in length and takes around 2 hours 10 minutes to complete. The complete Tour Of Tameside, with full mapping and route finding text is now available and will be free to anyone purchasing either of the two volumes of Walks In Tameside.
