Tour Of Tameside 2 – Portland Basin To Werneth Low
Tour Of Tameside 2 is the second section of this circular walk, an alternative route to the Tameside Trail. The tour visits all 9 towns in the borough, albeit some of them only briefly. Some parts of the route are the same as the Tameside Trail, this is unavoidable. The Tour Of Tameside is an anti-clockwise walk and keeps to the countryside or waterways and only short sections are on roads.
Tour Of Tameside 2 starts at the Portland Basin in Ashton-under-Lyne and follows the Peak Forest Canal to Dukinfield. It then heads down to the River Tame and follows the river to Haughton Dale in Denton.
Tour Of Tameside 2 crosses Gibraltar Bridge in Haughton Dale and then heads up to rejoin the Peak Forest Canal. The route follows the Peak Forest Canal to bridge number 10. From here it crosses the bridge and follows the well defined path left of Unity Mills. It then passes over the railway line and reaches the A560 Hyde Road. The route of Tour Of Tameside 2 continues past the Joshua Bradley public house, turns right into the woods and reaches Bowlacre Farm.
From Bowlacre Farm it is all uphill through the fields south of Gee Cross to Birches Farm and then Lowside Farm. The path, still climbing reaches Werneth Low Road, where a left turn goes past the Hare and Hounds public house and on to the Quarry car park. From here Lower Higham Visitors Centre at Werneth Low is soon reached.
Tour Of Tameside 2 is graded moderate. It is 6.7 miles in length and takes around 2 hours 25 minutes to complete.
The complete Tour Of Tameside, with full mapping and route finding text will be available shortly and will be free to anyone purchasing either of the two volumes of Walks In Tameside.
